A new blog by Urban Institute describes six steps to build the foundation for an American apprenticeship system. In this blog author, Robert Lerman, examines the existing apprenticeship model and the strategies to scale quality apprenticeship programs including developing recognized occupational frameworks and creating apprenticeship positions within federal, state, and local governments. Lerman also highlights the opportunity to train 25 to 30 percent of workers through a quality US apprenticeship system.

While these six strategies are meaningful for policymakers and other stakeholders they are also essential for Navigators who work with qualified apprentices every day. An enhanced apprenticeship system could ultimately expand access to economic opportunity and lead millions of Americans to better jobs.
