When someone is in a power dynamic where they control the communication in the conversation, but you can't redirect them in any way as they are your superior. This is hard. It can lead to meetings with far too much unnecessary information being shared and you feel stuck in that space with no power to change it.
I had to solve a problem in my organization with food insecurity. I assumed it was a need as we didn't have a food pantry for students. I should have reviewed the need beforehand as the pantry was underutilized.
It helps to think before you speak and lower your voice to encourage them to lower theirs, if needed. If they're raising their voice, they'll usually match your tone if you intentionally approach the conversation calmly.
I had a leader who led by example. She stepped in and assisted when needed, walked with us (not ahead), and was dedicated to our mission.
